The Issues of 2022
2022 is, once again, turning out to be a year like no other. The most important issues on people’s minds are both economic and social. Unrest over inflation and guns are a few of the many issues that candidates will have to answer in their bid for Congress or the Governor’s Mansion.
Inflation
The primary issue for many Americans is inflation. The United States has experienced record inflation rates not seen since the Jimmy Carter era. The increase in demand paired with a lack of supply has lowered the value of consumers’s pockets.
Economic Outlook
Efforts by the Fed to lower inflation through increased interest rates have so far been numb. Consequently, fears are rising that for inflation to end, there must be an economic recession. Some voters are fearing a future where their jobs could be at stake because of reduced consumer spending.
Abortion
The Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade has angered many women as states begin to ban the procedure. Most of these bans have gone against public sentiment. The Democrats are looking to galvanize their voters on this issue in statewide races and confront Republicans in swing districts.
Guns
In May, there were two high profile shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas. In both cases, an assault-style rifle was legally obtained by two young men. Congress reached an agreement to increase gun safety in the wake of these shootings with the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, but many voters are demanding more be done to restrict guns from entering the hands of perpetrators.
Crime
High profile shootings typically receive coverage by national media. That said, there are a string of daily shootings that happen across America’s cities. In New York City, violence has risen even as Mayor Eric Adams (D) engages in a war on crime. Commuters in swing districts are looking towards candidates who will more rigorously suppress urban violence.
Child Development
Education, childcare, and critical race theory are making parents concerned about the development of their children. Republicans have attacked Democrats over curriculums that focus on social equality. Many suburban parents are demanding better education and childcare system.
